A doula is specially trained to work with families in pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. She offers informational, emotional and physical support to the family. While not offering medical advice or treatment, she is trained to act as an advocate for the family in the healthcare environment.
Research shows more beneficial effects from birth support by a doula than from family, friends or fathers alone
- Shorter labor
- Less difficult and less painful labor
- A more pleasant birth experience
- More success with breastfeeding
- Less need for pain medications
- Less chance of cesarean section
- Less need for pitocin induction
- Reduced postpartum depression
- More confidence for motherhood
